Polishing & Compound

Polishing is the only way to truly remove scratches, swirls and dullness. You abrade away a microscopically thin layer of paint until the surface is even again. For that you need compounds, polish, the right pads and a machine. Hand polishing works for small areas, but for a whole car a rotary or DA machine is essential.

The result of a proper polish is visible on the first day. But the real work is in the preparation: decontamination, choosing the right product combination for the depth of the scratches and working one panel at a time so you do not generate excessive heat on the paint.

Frequently asked questions

A rotary spins in one direction and has more cutting power, but demands more experience because it can burn the paint easily if used incorrectly. A DA (dual action) moves eccentrically, is more forgiving and is ideal when you are starting out with machine polishing.

If you run your fingernail across the scratch and clearly feel it, it goes through the colour coat. That is the point where polishing is not enough. Shallow scratches you can see but cannot feel can in most cases be removed with compound.

Always start with the least aggressive product that gets the job done. For swirls and light scratches a fine compound or an all-in-one product is often enough. For deeper scratches and heavy oxidation you step up to a heavy compound, followed by a finer polish to finish.

By hand you can tackle small areas and localised scratches. For a whole car that is not realistic, because you can never generate the consistent pressure and movement by hand needed for a good result on larger surfaces.

Yes, always. Polishing opens up and cleans the paint, but also leaves it more vulnerable. Without protection dirt and moisture penetrate the surface faster and new swirls follow quickly. Wax, sealant or coating, depending on how long you want that protection to last.

Tips for Polishing & Compound

Always do a test section on a small area first when you are using a new compound or a new machine. That tells you how aggressive the product is before you tackle a full panel.
Match the right pad to the right compound. A cutting pad with a heavy compound for deeper scratches, a finishing pad with a fine polish for the final step. The combination determines the result, not just the product alone.
Do not run the machine too fast. High speed without movement generates heat and can burn the paint. Always keep the machine moving evenly and let the product do the work.
Remove compound and polish residue with a clean microfibre immediately after each pass. Dried residue is harder to remove and can cloud your final result.
Final inspection always under a strong spotlight or directed LED lamp held at an angle to the paint. Daylight hides subtle swirls that are visible under artificial light.
