Paint Care

Paint care covers everything you do to keep your car's finish in good condition: polishing and compounding, washing, protecting and coating. Most of the damage you see on paintwork, swirls, scratches and dullness, is not inevitable. It is the result of incorrect washing, poor products or neglect.

Whether you want to bring a car back to showroom shine or simply protect the existing paint for years to come, the foundation is the same: first correct what is wrong, then protect what is good. That order is not optional.

Frequently asked questions

Polishing corrects the paint by abrading away a very thin layer. Waxing and coating are protective layers that sit on top of the paint. Wax is easy to apply but breaks down faster. Coating lasts longer but requires more thorough preparation.

No. If the paint is already in good condition, free of swirls and scratches, you can move straight to protection. Polishing is only needed when you want to correct paint defects or improve the gloss.

Many steps in paint care are perfectly achievable yourself, such as washing, clay bar, waxing and sealant. Machine polishing takes some practice and the right products, but it is definitely achievable if you take the time to learn.

You use a paint depth gauge for that. It measures in microns and gives you a picture of the remaining thickness across different panels. Especially on older cars or cars that have been resprayed before, this is essential to avoid cutting through the paint.

Washing too aggressively with the wrong materials, applying protection to paint that is not clean and skipping polishing on a scratched car before coating. Each of those mistakes costs more work later than it saves in the short term.

Tips for Paint Care

Always use the two-bucket method when washing. One bucket with soapy water for the mitt, one with clean water for rinsing. That stops you dragging grit and dirt back across the paint.
Decontaminate your paint twice a year with a clay bar. Washing removes surface dirt, but iron particles and tar sit deeper and need to be pulled out mechanically.
Never dry off with a cotton towel. A microfibre drying towel or blown dry (with a leaf blower) prevents the microscopic scratches that show up when light hits the surface at an angle.
Always apply protection to clean, cool and dry paint. Wax, sealant or coating will not bond properly to a dirty or damp surface.
Swirls almost always come from the washing routine. Look critically at your equipment: are you using a soft, clean wash mitt, rinsing your buckets regularly and using a pH-neutral shampoo?
