Compound & Polish

Compound and polish are both abrasives, but they work at a different level. Compound is coarser and cuts deeper, designed to remove scratches, heavy swirls and oxidation. Polish is finer and refines the surface after compound has done its work. Together they form the core of paint correction.

Choosing the right product starts with the condition of the paint. A car with light swirls needs something different from a car with deep scratches or heavy oxidation. The combination of compound, polish and pad ultimately determines how deep you go and how sharp your finish comes out.

Frequently asked questions

Compound has larger abrasive particles and removes more paint. That is what you use for deeper defects. Polish has finer particles and refines the surface after compound has done its work. Compound corrects, polish refines.

You can, but be careful. New cars already have factory swirls from transport film or the first washes at the dealership. If you want those removed, a light compound on a DA machine is the right approach. Always check paint thickness first before you start.

That depends on the original paint thickness and how much material you remove each time. A paint depth gauge is the only way to track that precisely. As a rule of thumb, most factory paint jobs have room for several corrections, as long as you do not work unnecessarily aggressively each time.

That is almost always caused by a contaminated or wrong pad, too much pressure, or working too dry. Compound on a hard or dirty pad introduces new scratches while trying to remove existing ones. Work with clean pads, enough product and an even movement.

For a car with minimal paint defects and as a maintenance product: yes. For a car with visible scratches, deep swirls or oxidation: no. An all-in-one compromises on both fronts and cannot deliver the result on damaged paint that separate steps can.

Tips for Compound & Polish

Use compound as the first step for deeper scratches and oxidation, followed by a finer polish to finish. Do not skip the finishing step because compound always leaves microscopic polishing marks.
Apply compound and polish on a one-thin-layer-at-a-time principle. Apply thin, work it in fully, then remove. Piling on more product does not help and makes the work harder.
Replace your pads after each use. A contaminated pad no longer cuts consistently and can introduce scratches you are trying to remove.
An all-in-one polish combines moderate abrasion with light protection. Useful for maintenance passes on already corrected paint, but not as a replacement for a proper two-step compound and polish session on damaged paint.
Check your work after each step under a strong light before moving to the next. If compound marks are still visible, you need another pass before switching to polish.
