A good cloth or mitt is the direct contact point between chemistry and paint. The wrong material, too coarse or with too little pile, scratches paint that you only notice in direct sunlight. A wash mitt in microfibre or sheepskin has long fibres that pick up dirt and hold it away from the paint surface. A sponge traps dirt against the surface and drags it across. On paintwork a mitt is always safer than a sponge.

Soft synthetic or natural bristles for paint, interior upholstery and dashboards. Stiffer nylon for wheels, tyres and heavy dirt on underbody areas. Long handle for deep wheel barrels and undersides. A small detailing brush for badges, seams and logos.

There is no fixed schedule, but discard a cloth when the fibres become fuzzy or knotted, when stitching starts to come loose, or when the cloth still smells after washing. A worn cloth risks scratching paint more than a new one.

With a grit guard. The grid at the bottom of the bucket keeps dirt and sand on the floor of the bucket so it does not transfer back into the mitt. You can rub the mitt over it to release dirt before dipping back into shampoo. It is a cheap investment that prevents scratches.

Tips for Cloths, Brushes & Accessories

Use the two-bucket method: one bucket with shampoo, one with clean rinse water. Rinse the mitt in the rinse bucket before dipping it back into shampoo. This keeps the shampoo lubricated longer.
Sort cloths by job and store them separately: paint cloths, glass cloths, interior cloths and wheel cloths. One cloth for everything cross-contaminates.
Always wash microfibre cloths without fabric softener. Softener fills the micropores so the cloth stops absorbing and starts smearing instead of lifting dirt.
Throw out a damaged mitt. Loose stitching or worn fibres cause scratches that no amount of premium shampoo can undo.
Use a separate long-handled brush for wheels so you can reach behind spokes and brake calipers. Wheel grime on your paint brush is the shortest route to scratches.
