Rainwater that dries on paint or glass leaves behind calcium and mineral deposits. Those white, dull spots are not sitting on the surface, they are etched into it. Washing doesn't help, and scrubbing with a regular cloth quickly makes it worse through micro-scratching.
A water spot remover contains mildly acidic compounds that break the calcium bond without attacking the paint or glass. You apply the product, let it dwell briefly, and wipe away the dissolved minerals. Then treat the surface with a protective layer so water beads off more easily and new spots have less chance to form.
