Metal & Chrome Polish

Chrome, stainless steel, aluminium, and exhaust pipes react differently to oxidation and dirt than body paint. A dedicated metal polish contains milder abrasives tailored to the soft but sensitive surface structure of metal. Regular car polish is often too aggressive and can leave fine scratches that are far more visible on shiny metal than on paint.

Results vary significantly by metal type: polished aluminium retains gloss less durably than chrome-plated steel, and stainless steel is particularly prone to heat discolouration. Choose the product based on the metal type and the degree of oxidation.

Many universal metal polishes work on both chrome and aluminium. Do check whether the abrasiveness is suitable; anodised aluminium is more sensitive than polished aluminium and requires a milder formula. When in doubt, choose a product that specifically mentions aluminium.

Use an exhaust-specific polish or a compound with slightly higher abrasive strength. Work in small circular motions and repeat if results are disappointing. Blue/purple discolouration from extreme heat is sometimes too deep for polish and may require mechanical sanding.

A thin layer of carnauba wax or a synthetic sealant works well on chrome. There are also dedicated metal sealants that last somewhat longer. Make sure the surface is completely dry and grease-free before applying.

Be careful: chrome-plated plastic has a much thinner chrome layer than solid metal. Use only a mild, non-abrasive metal polish and apply minimal pressure. Too much aggression permanently damages the chrome layer.
