Rust Protection & Preservation

Rust always starts where you can't see it. In sill cavities, along welds and behind wheel arches, moisture works its way through steel year after year. Cavity wax or oil-based protection stops that process from the inside: it fills gaps and displaces water before damage sets in.

Underbody coating handles the outside. Rubber or bitumen-based products absorb stone chips, reduce noise and keep salt and road dirt at bay. Whether you're treating a car preventively or restoring already-affected steel, the sequence is always the same: clean, degrease, protect.

Frequently asked questions

Cavity wax is designed to protect enclosed profiles and hard-to-reach areas from the inside, such as sills and doors. Underbody coating is a thick product applied to the outside of the floor to shield it from stone chips, salt and road grime.

Remove light surface rust mechanically or chemically first, otherwise you're sealing in the rust rather than protecting the steel. Rust converters can neutralise mild oxidation, but they don't replace thorough sanding when corrosion is more advanced.

It depends on the product and driving conditions. Wax-based products don't harden and keep creeping into seams, which is a benefit, but they also wear faster. Check annually and reapply every two to three years, or sooner if the car frequently drives in salty or wet conditions.

A lift makes the job significantly easier and gives a more even result. With a good jack, solid axle stands and a work light you can manage too, but make sure you can reach the entire underside without awkward or unsafe positions.

A rust converter reacts chemically with iron oxide, turning it into a more stable that can be painted or coated over. Use it on surface rust you can't fully grind away, never as a substitute for proper preparation on structural parts.
