Clay Bars & Mitts

Your car can look spotless and still feel rough when you run your hand over the paint. Rail dust, brake dust, industrial fallout and resin particles have embedded themselves so deep in the paint that washing won't release them. Clay bars and clay mitts tackle this mechanically: they grip the particles and pull them out of the paint surface.

Claying is the step between washing and polishing or coating. Without claying, a sealant or coating has invisible contamination underneath it, leading to poor bonding and reduced gloss. With a clay treatment the paint feels smooth as glass and every protective layer bonds significantly better.

Do the bag test: slip your hand into a thin plastic bag and slide it slowly over the washed paint. If it feels rough or gritty, there is embedded contamination. On a coated or polished car the paint should feel completely smooth.

A clay bar is a piece of clay you move across the paint with your fingers; you have great control but it is slower. A clay mitt is a glove with a clay surface and is much faster for large panels like roofs and bonnets. The clay mitt is also easier to clean and reuse.

You can clay matte paintwork, but use only a very fine, soft clay and plenty of lubricant. Regular clay bars can affect the matte appearance. Always check on an invisible spot before treating a full panel.

That depends on the environment. Near an airport, industrial area or major road there is more fallout and you need to do the bag test more often. As a rule of thumb: clay before every coating or application, and otherwise whenever the bag test indicates roughness.

No, that is not necessary. Clay removes contamination but doesn't leave deeper scratches like polishing does. After claying you can apply a wax or sealant directly if the paint is already in good condition. Polishing is for when the paint shows scratches, swirls or oxidation.
