Q: How do I know if my shampoo is safe for my coating?

Check whether the shampoo is pH-neutral and free from degreasers or wax strippers. Many coating manufacturers recommend their own maintenance shampoo. If in doubt, check the specifications or ask your coating supplier.

The hand wash is the foundation of any detailing process. With the right shampoo, clean materials, and good technique you can wash the car without swirls or scratches.

Drying is just as important: a drying towel dragged across the paintwork in one pass can cause more scratches than a poor wash. Choose microfibre or a drying towel that absorbs water without dragging.

Frequently asked questions

You work with one bucket of shampoo water and one bucket of clean rinse water. After each panel you rinse the dirt out of your wash mitt in the clean bucket, so you never spread dirty water back onto the paint. A grit guard at the bottom keeps the dirt settled.

A thick, high-GSM microfibre towel absorbs water quickly without dragging across the paint. For larger cars, a drying towel of 60x90 cm or bigger is practical: fewer repositions, less chance of scratches.

A microfibre or lambswool wash mitt traps dirt in its fibres and keeps it away from the paint. A regular sponge holds dirt at the surface and drags it across the paint. For scratch-free washing, always choose a wash mitt.

Water spots form when minerals in the water evaporate on the paint. Always dry the car immediately after rinsing and avoid working in direct sunlight. Using demineralised water as a final rinse prevents spots almost entirely.
