The Leather Expert Steering Wheel Restoration Kit is a complete set to make a worn, dull or shiny black leather steering wheel look like new again. The kit holds a preparer, alcohol cleaner, black colourant and top coat, plus sponges, a sanding sponge and a cloth. You remove the old, worn layer, degrease, recolour and seal. You will find the Leather Expert Steering Wheel Restoration Kit in the shop.
When to use this kit
The steering wheel is the most-touched piece of leather in the car. Through hand grease and wear, black leather there turns shiny, greyed and dull over time. This kit is made to restore that colour and finish: you lay down a new black colour layer and seal it. Important to know: this is a recolour and relacquer kit, not a repair kit. If there are cracks or holes in the leather, you tackle those separately first with a repair kit.
The kit contains everything for the colour treatment itself. If you want to understand the separate colour or a different shade, look at the Leather Expert Leather Colourant. You will find more leather restoration products in the leather cleaning and care category.
How to use it
Prepare. Remove the old, worn finish with the preparer and the sanding sponge, so you have a clean base.
Degrease. Wipe the wheel with the alcohol cleaner so there is no hand grease left and the colour adheres well.
Recolour. Apply the black colourant in thin layers with the sponge and let each layer dry for even coverage.
Seal and let it rest. Finish with the top coat and then leave the wheel to rest for about five days before you clean or condition it again.
What to watch for
Work thin and patient: the wheel is round and visible, so thin layers give the most even coverage. If there are also small cracks besides the colour wear, repair those first with the Leather Expert Leather Repair Kit before you recolour. When in doubt, test on a small, hidden part of the wheel first.
Tips for the best result
Take your time on the prep. A well-prepared base determines whether the new colour stays put.
Build up in thin layers. Several thin layers cover more evenly than one thick layer.
Do not skip the top coat. On the wheel especially, which you touch constantly, the finishing layer protects the new colour.
Respect the rest time. Not cleaning for five days lets the coating fully cure.
If you want cleaning and conditioning in one set alongside recolouring, look at the guide on the steering wheel care and repair kit. The complete picture of cleaning, conditioning and repairing is in the guide cleaning, conditioning and repairing leather.
